Making the Case for Developer Training

Investing in employee training is one of, if not the most high-leverage organizational activities for promoting employee engagement.

Although onboarding is often a primary area of focus for learning and development efforts, ongoing professional development that is task-specific and related to tangible career outcomes is correlated with higher levels of job satisfaction and lower levels of employee turnover.

This should make intuitive sense to business decision-makers as training is a direct investment in talent. Training makes employees feel more competent, invested, and valued. Perhaps best of all, training can influence career advancement, providing a motivating pathway within an organization.

Simply stated, employees who feel more competent at work are happier.

Also, employees who receive useful training opportunities also display higher levels of organizational commitment. Employees who are invested in themselves are more likely to be motivated to invest back into their organization.

Finally, all this is more important than ever for employees facing potential job disruption related to not evolving their job skills

Training and learning best practices for organizations

  1. Provide quality, role-specific training for employees—and clearly communicate how learning opportunities relate to organizational advancement.
  2. Create mixed modality learning opportunities—live training, cohort-based learning, asynchronous online modules, mentorships, and others. When employees have options to choose learning materials in a variety of modes, learning outcomes increase.
  3. Prioritize focused time for learning—ideally, learning shouldn’t be added to an already full plate for employees.
